FAQs

Where do you train?
Off Leash K9 Training has a facility at 8150 Lark Brown Rd. Elkridge Maryland, 21075.  We book daytime, evening, and weekend lessons. Off Leash K9 Training will always try our best to accommodate schedules to make things easy for our clients. We believe in real world, unpredictable distractions and work under those distractions so that your dog learns to listen under any condition.
What is an e-collar?
Modern day e-collars use the same technology that you’ll find in TENS machines that are used in physical therapy or chiropractic offices. Our training methods use low level stimulation which mimics that of a “tap on the shoulder” for dogs, and our results speak for themselves. At Off Leash K9 Training, our ultimate goal is for your dog to be flawlessly obedient without stimulation from the e-collar, with distractions, and we work with you and your dog to make that possible. The e-collar ends up being like an invisible leash.
Will an e-collar hurt my dog or affect their personality?
No. The e-collar will not hurt your dog or affect their personality. The e-collar is simply used as a training tool in order to communicate with your dog. There is a common misconception regarding e-collars; they are often mistaken for “shock collars”. In the old days, inexperienced dog owners would try and use these devices in order to scare their dogs into submission. Utilizing the Off Leash K9 Training proven method of combining positive reinforcement marker training along with an e-collar, your dog will NEVER be “shocked into submission”. Unlike a shocking device, the e-collar is used to get the dog’s attention and keep it focused on listening to the handler.
Will my dog always have to wear the e-collar?
No. Your dog will not always have to wear the e-collar. In fact, inside your home, your dog will quickly be listening to your every command without the e-collar on. However, We recommend you keep the e-collar on even in the house until your dog is completely obedient in your commands. Also, we always recommend putting the e-collar on your dog before you take it outside off-leash. This is due to the fact that you never know what may get your dog’s attention, so, you still want to be able to maintain complete control of your dog. It’s like an invisible leash. We often compare your pet wearing the collar outside to a child wearing a seat belt. Parents drill into their children the importance of wearing a seat belt each and every time they get into a car. That one time the child doesn’t wear the seat belt could be that one time they are in a car accident and a seat belt would have prevented injury. It only takes one time for you dog to see something that really catches their attention and without the collar, you have no way to stop him/her.
Will my dog hate wearing the e-collar?
No! Almost everyone is VERY surprised that they receive quite the OPPOSITE reaction from their dog. When you go to put the e-collar on, in a very short time, your dog will recognize this and will coming running and sit down in front of you and wait for you to put it on them. Why? Because the dog knows the e-collar means that they are going outside (to run, play ball, be free, etc) AND they know they are going to do training! A bored dog is a destructive dog; a trained/exercised dog is a HAPPY dog. They look forward to their training sessions because it stimulates them and gives them something to do. Dogs want to be trained and want you to tell them what to do. That means FREEDOM for them! Their only REAL stimulation is the training you give them and their time outside to run, play, and bond with you!
How much time per day do I need to train my dog?
The great thing about this training is that you don’t have to set a specific amount of time aside per day in order to train your dog! We will teach you how to incorporate this training into your daily routine. Off Leash K9 Training does ask that you spend 30 minutes per day working with your dog for the first 4 weeks of training, to set a good foundation for the training, but after that integrating the training into your daily routine will be easy!
How long will this training take?
Off Leash K9 Training Basic Obedience is generally done in 4 lessons (1 hr. ea. lesson) and if you purchase the advanced obedience package, it is another 4 lessons (1 hr. ea. lesson)
At what age can we start e-collar training?
Generally, we do not start e-collar training on a dog until it is at least 5 months old. The reason is a puppy has to develop just like a child does in the beginning of life. We found at 5 months old, dogs are more receptive to the training and you will get a better trained dog.
